Wallace boasts excellent
outdoor recreation facilities. A
volunteer group, Wallace and Area Recreation Committee, maintains the
multi-sport facility. Established in the 1970's, all the venues are new
or updated since 2000.
The
recreation area is located near the heart of Wallace on route 307, just
south
of the elementary school.
Located at the site is a
fully fenced softball
field with
groomed grass outfield. Covered benches (dugouts) exist for each team.
Outside
of the fence is a set of bleachers for fans to safely enjoy the games.
In a
separate area is a fenced tennis
court with an asphalt playing surface.
This
court is also equipped with four basketball
nets so it can be used for
that
sport as well. On the same site is a rink area which has an asphalt
surface as
well. The rink has four foot boarded walls with fencing above them. The
rink
also has four permanent basketball nets. The rink can be used for a
multitude of
purposes, ball hockey,
skate-boarding,
roller-blading,
to name but a few. In the
winter
months, when weather cooperates, the surface is flooded to make an ice
rink.
An onsite well and ice resurfacing equipment keep the ice in prime
condition. The ice rink can be used for ice skating and, of
course, ice hockey;
two nets
are
available. Toilets are conveniently located between venues. There is a
permanent
canteen
structure so during events a canteen service can be provided if
organizers so
desire. There is ample parking for participants and spectators.
All of the facilities are
free for the community to use.
Use may be scheduled and scheduling is necessary for extended or
specific time
use. It is required
is that users share
the facilities equitably. For example, should persons desire to play
basketball
while others are playing tennis, then after no more than an hour the
tennis
players are required to for go use of the court. Those with
pre-scheduled use
are exempt from the requirement to share with walk-up users. The
community has
been very cooperative and this sharing of the facilities is working
well.
The Wallace community has a minor baseball program
that uses the softball field for its home games and practices. The
Pugwash District High School Panthers softball teams also use the
facilities as their home field. During
the
school summer break, Wallace partners with neighbouring communities and
shares
a recreation coordinator. This coordinator operates scheduled
activities for
youth of various ages though out the summer in the communities. The
Wallace
activities take place at the recreation facilities. The
activities
vary from year to year depending on participant interests and the
coordinator's
skills and knowledge.
